Hello and Welcome!
My name is Shala and I am a counsellor, social worker, aunty, sister, daughter, and close friend; I would be honored to work with you and support you along your healing journey.
I practice from a strengths-based trauma-informed perspective and use a variety of therapeutic techniques. Together we can work towards clarifying your goals and values, setting boundaries, developing healthier coping mechanisms, enhancing self-compassion, and alleviating uncomfortable symptoms. I offer a warm non-judgmental space for Black folks to be seen, centered, and heard. I assist clients with creating renewed feelings of hope, joy, peace, and a greater sense of balance. I view wellness holistically and recognize the importance of using healing strategies to better the mind, body, spirit, and broader community.
Over the last decade I've strived to be of assistance to individuals and families through my work in women's shelters and transitional housing, youth centers/ programs, human rights research and policy development, and most recently, acute and primary care. My work in the healthcare setting typically involves patient advocacy, patient/family to medical team liaision, psychosocial assessments, system-navigation, resource linkage, referrals supports, case management, grief and bereavement aid, and brief solutions-focused therapy.
I am passionate about anti-racism and healing from internalized oppression. I am well equipped to walk alongside folks struggling with discrimination and/or race-based trauma and grief, racial identity issues, intergenerational trauma, transracial adoption challenges, and those striving to unlearn internalized-oppression. I work in allyship with 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and am committed to facilitating a safer mental health space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC).
I tailor my treatment to fit your unique needs and honor your inherent knowledge and lived experiences. If you’re interested in working towards greater self-compassion and healing through meaningful relationship please contact me to see if I’m the right fit for you. Thank you and I look forward to connecting with you soon!
