Getting to know my client as a multidimensional individual is an essential part of beginning to work with all clients; people are more than a diagnosis, a past or current struggle, or a limitation they place on themselves. I strive to build strong working relationships with my client by using my active listening skills, which help them feel seen and heard. I also utilize my natural curiosity for my client’s background, their current lives, and who they wish to become. I show concern by communicating respect, empathy, and acceptance for all people from different backgrounds, culturally, ethnically, and socioeconomically as well as in terms of gender expression and identification and sexuality. These aforementioned qualities are necessities for creating a safe space and holding environment to welcome clients.
