Hello, I'm so glad you're here!
First, I want to say thank you for taking the step to explore if I am the right therapist for you. I know seeking mental health treatment can be hard and confusing, so I think it’s important to pat yourself on the back for even making it this far.
My name is Jaleesa Black. I am a member of Thrive Psychology Group, a private group practice in Los Angeles, CA that primarily focuses on serving the needs of professional women. Our founder established the group to address the specific needs of women who are frequently oppressed by our patriarchal society. When I joined Thrive my intent was to be a resource for marginalized groups, like women of color.
As a woman of color, I understand the struggles of having to identify as the “Strong Black Woman” and the need to pretend to have it all together all the time. We ourselves are human and deserving of compassion and support as well. I understand the anxiety and pressure that can be felt in corporate spaces for women of color to positively represent their entire race. I understand the trauma that is also experienced daily from seeing injustice after injustice that takes place against so many others that look like you or me.
As a therapist, I’m here to help not only women of color learn to be more compassionate towards themselves and their needs but help every strong woman learn to be kind and patient with themselves as they manage the obstacles life throws at them. I know that as women we tend to be there to take care of the needs of so many others while neglecting our own needs.
I can help hold space for you to truly let your guard down and finally accept the support you deserve and need. I have extensive training working with depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, victims of crime, boundary setting, minority stress, and oppositional/impulse/conduct disorders in teens.
I am certified in Functional Family Therapy (FFT), Depression Treatment Quality Intervention (DTQI), and Mindfulness which is effective in treating depression and anxiety disorders. I operate from a combination of methods that includes person-centered, attachment-based, and solution-focused therapy modalities with CBT techniques. I believe this allows my clients to have autonomy in their therapeutic process while also exploring how their early attachment experiences may impact the way they move about the world. I utilize CBT techniques to provide my clients with concrete tools that will help move them towards the personal growth they wish to achieve.
One thing you will realize about me is I love to create a vibe in any aspect of life. From being around nature and incorporating its peaceful qualities in whatever space I can, to listening to music that feels good to the soul and mind. I believe that vibes are everything and can truly shift a person’s mood. I am not the therapist that will be completely serious in the room 24/7. I use humor to connect with my clients and have a very open, accepting mindset.
Nothing truly shocks me and I always operate from a non-judgmental stance in order to connect with my clients. My goal as a therapist is to have each person I see find healing and empowerment. I truly believe for someone to open up, they must first feel safe. I am dedicated to building a trusting and welcoming environment that fosters room for my clients to build/improve their self-esteem, fix emotional regulation difficulties, and foster better self-awareness. I am passionate about helping my clients live a life full of purpose and joy. I am dedicated to helping my clients learn to be kind and patient with themselves and their self-growth.
My clients would say I am warm, compassionate, a good listener, a great accountability partner, and that I am flexible in approaching my clients' unique circumstances. I also like to have a gentle balance of being a safety net while also nudging my clients slowly out of their comfort zones.
I like my clients to remember, “The only thing that is stopping you from where you are to where you want to go is your comfort zone.” – Dhaval Gaudier.
Taking risks is scary and that’s why I hope through our work together you can gain enough knowledge and insight about yourself so that you can make the decisions and life choices that feel the best for you. Good or bad, you can be sure I'll be an anchor to ground you and support you through the rough patches. This journey of healing and growth will not always be pretty, but it will be needed so you can truly live the life you want for your authentic self.
