“There is a tendency to underestimate how intensely distressing and disabling loss usually is and for how long the distress, and often the disablement, commonly lasts…There is a tendency to suppose that a normal healthy person can and should get over a bereavement not only fairly rapidly but also completely. But, loss of a loved person is one of the most intensely painful experiences any human being can suffer.” – John Bowlby, Loss, Sadness, and Depression
I provide compassionate and culturally responsive online grief therapy for African Americans distressed by the death of a loved one days, weeks, months, or years after the loss. I also support individuals struggling with anticipatory grief and grief related to other major life transitions. My structured and integrative approach to grief and bereavement therapy is informed by: (1) my studies of trauma, grief and bereavement, (2) my own experience with traumatic loss, and, (3) my religious, spiritual, and, holistic wellness studies and practices. Therapy with me includes humanistic, somatic, nature-based, expressive arts, emotion-focused, cognitive and behavioral interventions, and healing interventions rooted within the Black Church religious tradition.
If interested, you can learn more about my own experience with traumatic grief and its influence on my therapy practice through this Shapes of Grief Podcast conversation, "Dying, Death, and Grief as a Black Woman in America" https://www.shapesofgrief.com/podcast/ep-73-dr-nyasha-grayman-when-one-twin-dies
Anecdotally, my clients describe me as, "helpful," "knowledgeable," and "trustworthy." Why do I do this work? I do this work because I was called to it, and I consider it a sacred honor and reward.
My practice is boutique. This allows me to give you more attention than is typically found in traditional once a week therapy and/or agency settings. Working outside the constraints of various insurance panels also allows me to offer you a highly personalized therapeutic experience. At the same time, my clients have been able to submit the Statements for Insurance Reimbursement I provide to have 50%-70% of my fee for therapy returned to them. In other words, please do not let the fact that I do not accept insurance for payment up front deter you from working with me if you feel I am the best fit for your grief support needs.
I am glad that you found me, and would be honored to accompany you through your difficult season.
