“There is a tendency to underestimate how intensely distressing and disabling loss usually is and for how long the distress, and often the disablement, commonly lasts…There is a tendency to suppose that a normal healthy person can and should get over a bereavement not only fairly rapidly but also completely. But, loss of a loved person is one of the most intensely painful experiences any human being can suffer.” – John Bowlby, Loss, Sadness, and Depression

I provide private, compassionate, and culturally responsive online grief therapy to Black women dealing with the death of a loved one days, weeks, months, or years after the loss. I also support Black women struggling with anticipatory grief.

My approach to traumatic grief therapy is intensive and structured (beginning with 18 sessions over eight weeks), and takes all dimensions of the whole being into consideration. This holistic style is informed by my in-depth studies of trauma, grief and bereavement, my own experience with traumatic loss, and my religious, spiritual and holistic wellness studies and practices, including those coming out of Black, womanist, and Christian theological perspectives. Therapy with me includes interventions rooted in humanistic, somatic, nature-based, expressive art, emotion-focused, cognitive-behavioral and Black Church understandings of transformation, healing, and wellness.

I have more than 20 years experience working within our community, and if interested, you can learn more about my own journey with traumatic grief and its influence on my therapy practice through this Shapes of Grief Podcast conversation, "When One Twin Dies" https://www.shapesofgrief.com/podcast/ep-73-dr-nyasha-grayman-when-one-twin-dies

Finally, my practice is boutique and high touch. I take on no more than one new client a month, and I work with no more than six clients at one time. This allows me to give you more attention than is typically found in traditional once a week therapy and/or agency settings. Working outside the constraints of various insurance panels also allows me to offer you a highly personalized therapeutic experience. At the same time, my clients are able to submit the "Statements for Insurance Reimbursement"/"Superbills" I provide to have part of my fee for therapy returned to them. In other words, please do not let the fact that I do not accept insurance for payment up front deter you from working with me if you feel I am the best fit for your grief support needs. Anecdotally, my clients describe me as a warm, knowledgeable, trustworthy, and helpful therapist. ☀️
