Description
Life is hard — and most of us keep waiting for it to get easier on its own. But real, lasting change only happens when we build the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual skills to meet life differently. Therapy is where that transformation begins. It is where you learn, practice, and grow, with someone in your corner who truly sees you, honors your story, and refuses to ask you to leave any part of yourself at the door. I am Dr. LaNail R. Plummer — licensed therapist, founder and CEO of Onyx Therapy Group, author, and someone who has spent over 20 years creating space for people the mental health world has too often overlooked. I welcome all clients and specialize in serving Black and Brown communities, the LGBTQ+ population, couples, adolescents, and parents raising children with mental health concerns. I believe in intersectionality — that your race, gender, sexuality, culture, and lived experience are not footnotes to your healing; they are the foundation of it.
My approach is culturally grounded, solutions-focused, and holistic, because research only matters if it actually applies to your life. Drawing on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Solutions-Focused Therapy, Strengths-Based practice, and Play Therapy, I work with you to identify what is already working, shift the patterns that are not, and build the resilience to face whatever comes next. For parents navigating school systems while raising a child with mental health concerns, I offer dedicated parent education and counseling — because advocating for your child should never mean abandoning yourself. I hold a deep conviction that healing is more than talking about your feelings; it is a holistic, organic process that honors your whole being. As the author of The Essential Guide for Counseling Black Women (W.W. Norton, 2026) — named to 2026 book lists by Forbes, Ebony, and The Root — and the creator of the Culturally Intersected Clinical Supervision (CICS) model, I bring both clinical rigor and cultural fluency to every session. My work has been featured in TIME, Essence, The Today Show, New York Magazine, and Forbes, and I have spoken at TEDx, Mental Health America, and New York University.
You should not have to choose between finding a therapist who is excellent and finding one who actually gets your experience. You deserve both — and that is exactly what I offer. I understand that time, transportation, and access are real barriers, which is why I provide in-office sessions, telehealth, and on-site services in home or confidential community settings, serving clients across Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana. Whether you are carrying the weight of generational trauma, navigating relationship challenges, supporting a child through a mental health crisis, or simply trying to find yourself again after a season of loss — I am ready for you. You have already taken the first step by being here. Reach out today, and let us begin the work of building the life you deserve.
