I'm Dr. Domonique Casper Shaw, a licensed psychologist at The Black Girl Doctor, a virtual therapy practice that specializes in the mental health of professional Black women.

I can help you find inner peace through the adjustment process.
I specialize in treating grief and loss, depression, anxiety, and trauma. Specifically, my approach to therapy would involve working with you to unpack the past (i.e. negative messages from others and negative thoughts patterns) which may shape your narrative around loss, your identity, and other people. I use this information to challenge those perceptions and narratives (as needed), help you connect with your values, and live life to the fullest in the here and now #liveyourbestlife. After all, we experience change on a daily basis and rarely take a moment to pause, reflect, and question what we need from ourselves and others. I strive to facilitate a safe environment and develop rapport with clients through a supportive, encouraging, and healthy therapeutic relationship to develop growth and resilience.
I dedicated the early part of my career to serving underserved populations, particularly older adults and BIPOC. I graduated from Grambling State University with my BA in Psychology and then from The University of Iowa with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. I went on to complete my nationally accredited pre-doctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Palo Alto Health Care System in northern California. I have worked in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, group practices, client’s homes, and virtually.
The quote “Victory comes through your Adversity,” and the concept of resilience strongly resonates with me. My passion as a psychologist is to provide quality of care to underserved populations who experience mental health stigma. It is my goal to instill hope, encourage clients to take risks, bet on themselves, and do what matters. I am excited to join you along your journey of personal healing and growth.
In my down time, I enjoy spending time with family, cooking, laughing, outdoor activities (i.e. hiking, camping, and sitting on the beach which is rare in northern CA), sewing, watching T.V. and going to live music events.
