Dr. Barrett believes that health is wealth, and that total health is achieved when mental health is also prioritized. The nurturing of mental health, like physical health, can lead to wellness that moves one from surviving to thriving. Dr. B’s passion and focus for mental health and wellness, emphasizes caring for those in underserved communities. She provides mental health evaluations, therapy, medication management, and other client-specific treatment interventions and recommendations for clients across the life span. She is intentional about providing culturally specific care, which supports her core belief and practice of meeting clients where they are and acknowledging what clients bring with them. Her model of care is holistic, collaborative, and solution oriented and aims to move clients towards resolution as soon as possible.
 
Her experience spans over 25-years and is built on a foundation as a Christian, nurse, nurse practitioner, therapist, researcher, and educator. She has conducted mental health evaluations with treatment recommendations for Broward County’s Department of Juvenile Justice and community mental health clinics. She provides individual, group, family, and couples therapy in private practice settings, including Christian Counseling.
 
Dr. Barrett is a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a Doctorally prepared therapist, clinician, and educator. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Nova Southeastern University, specializing in Psychotherapy, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Degree from the University of Miami, and a Master of Science in Nursing/Advanced Practice Nursing (MSN/APRN) from Florida International University. She earned Bachelor degrees in Nursing and Business Administration from Barry University and City University of New York/Bernard M. Baruch College, respectively. 
  
She is the founder and CEO of Barbara Barrett, ARNP, INC. DBA -Mental Health Matters. The mission and vision of Mental Health Matters encompasses providing care for individuals experiencing emotional and behavioral challenges, especially those of ethnic minorities, addressing the current mental health stigma through increasing mental health awareness, and providing education about the mind-body connection. In addition to her passion for mental health, she is also passionate about social interaction, community engagement, and social change and strives to make a difference in these areas. She looks forward to meeting with you and discussing a plan of care that is tailored specifically to meet your needs.
