Hi. My name is Dawnielle Gaskin and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Illinois.
Being a clinical therapist is my second career. I was a Hair Salon Owner and Hairstylist for 17 years. My clients would come to get a hair service but feel comfortable and safe enough to disclose personal information and ask for feedback and advice from me. I began to love helping my clients work through some of their problems. I then decided to pursue a degree in psychology.
When working with clients, I am passionate about getting my clients to a place where they can realize how far they have come and for clients to witness their progress. I am excited when clients are comfortable with our therapeutic relationship and are transparent and open in our sessions. This is when the real work begins!
After each session, I want clients to understand themselves better, the issues and struggles they face, and help clients' begin to experience life in a new way. I am mindful that every session with clients will be different and involve clients feeling uncomfortable. Giving grace and stressing the importance of self-care will hopefully help clients get back to enjoying their lives again.
Building rapport with clients is a critical component in a therapeutic relationship. My recipe for creating a safe place for clients includes mutual trust, honesty, respect, empathy, and collaborative work in each session. My therapeutic approach is client-centered, and with structured guidance, clients create a shared sense of ownership in therapy.
I have worked in a range of settings: supportive housing, the foster care system, and The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), providing therapeutic services to children adolescents who have endured trauma and crisis management. I have experience working with individuals, relationship counseling, family therapy, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and adjustment/life transitions.
