Description

My name is Ariel Powell and I am a licensed master social worker and therapist. I received my undergraduate degree in Communications from CUNY Hunter College. I received my master's in social work from the Silver School of Social Work at New York University. I completed a year-long internship at MindfulNYU creating mindfulness-based programs for students of color. I also have experience working in community and school-based settings. In addition to working with KCWPSYCH, I currently provide and manage clinical services at a non-profit organization.

I am passionate about working with ethnically diverse communities of color around their race, gender, sexual, spiritual, and cultural identities. I operate from an anti-oppressive lens to center the intersections of identity and culture and how they influence our environment and our relationships to support healing. I like to collaborate with my clients to create an authentic and personalized space that affirms your individual identities and incorporates your unique strengths to support and guide the healing journey.

I utilize modalities such as CBT, Psychodynamic Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Somatic, Mindfulness, and other evidence-based techniques to help clients adopt healthier ways of navigating depression, stress, anxiety, communication, self-expression, interpersonal relationships, and challenges with life transitions. I also incorporate creative techniques such as artistic expression, journaling, music, video, and cinema therapy interventions.

I believe in increasing access and resources for mental health care to marginalized communities. As a member of the BIPOC community, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to seek and find wellness resources that see, hear, and validate us. I aim to hold space that encourages clients to express their authentic selves.

I currently provide therapy to clients who identify as members of BIPOC, (e.g. Black, African American, Hispanic, Latinx, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander...etc), POC, LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized underrepresented communities in the mental health space reside state of New York. I also work with individuals who do not identify within the aforementioned communities, but who identify as being allies to individuals in those communities as well.

I currently provide therapy to clients who reside in New York State, New York City, and all of the surrounding boroughs and cities.
